Mikhail Ilyashev, the Managing Partner of Ilyashev & Partners Law Firm, delivered a speech at the session Pro et Contra: Ratings of Law Firms at the VII International Forum for the Promotion of Legal Services, held on 12-13 December 2019 in Kyiv. The Forum was organized by the Yurydychna Praktyka Publishing House.
The experts discussed issues pertaining to the role of ratings in the life of legal market and criteria by which the law firms decide to participate in a particular survey.
“Today, there are not so many ratings, which are the ratings not only by name, but by the essence, – said Mikhail Ilyashev. – Participation in a well-known survey, with its own history, a clear and transparent methodology is one thing, and agreeing to participate in the study conducted for the first time, when the invitation to participate is received by e-mail as a “commercial offer” with prices for specific places in the rating, is quite another. The participation in such kind of “monitoring” is of no value, save for feeding your vanity. The legal market’s task is to draw a clear line between the ratings and the so-called “plaque sellers”.
Forum participants noted the evolution of ratings, emphasized their importance for the image of law firms in the eyes of their clients.
VII International Forum for the Promotion of Legal Services (PLS) is an annual specialized event for managing partners of the law firms and business development executives.
