News date: 16 June 2014

Energy and infrastructure

IFLR1000 energy and infrastructure 2014 recommends Ilyashev & Partners as follows.

Ilyasev & Partners is one of the leading firms for dispute resolution in Ukraine and as a consequence, it often secures roles on the biggest energy cases on the market for some key names. Additionally, the firm handles M&A, restructuring, privatizations, and regulatory and tax advice across the mining and gas sectors. It is experienced across a range of infrastructure work, although not defense or social projects.

Managing and name partner Mikhail Ilyashev, a specialist in contentious work and criminal law, has a wide range of experience on gas disputes and privatizations. Senior partner Roman Marchenko often also acts on the firm’s energy mandates.

Clients emphasize the strength of the firm’s dispute practice. “They are very good, it’s a sophisticated operation,” says one. “They were very busy but they were responsive and they are very good at their jobs“. Disputes work has represented a significant proportion of the recent energy mandates, which have largely been in the gas sector. One example saw the firm acting for in a case with MIC (Merchant International Company Ltd.) regarding the execution of Ukrainian court decision in the UK and in Ukraine. Other matters saw Ilyashev representing Ukrgaz-Energo in disputes with the cabinet of ministers, general prosecutor, ministry of oil and energy, ministry of finance, ministry of justice and other state authorities in Ukraine.

Financial and corporate

Ilyashev & Partners advises on a mix of financial and corporate work. In M&A its work receives good client feedback. One focuses on the advice of name partner Mikhail Ilyashev. “He is very innovative and quick, probably one of the best in the Ukraine; competent in many areas,” says one. Another observes, more generally: “I have known the firm for over ten years and have always been pleased with the service I have received from them.”

While perhaps less known in banking and finance circles it has secured a broad mix of work in this area, including some large deals. The firm has done a lot of work for state-owned companies. One example saw Maksym Kopeychykov advising Fininpro in issuing a $650 million bond. In M&A the firm also advised a national company, representing Antonov ASTC in its merger with AVIANT Kyiv State Aircraft Plant.

About IFLR 1000: Compiled by a team of dedicated legal journalists in London, Hong Kong and New York, IFLR1000 ENERGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE guide is the only publication of its kind to focus on the leading law firms and lawyers for energy and infrastructure work. ENERGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE is a sister publication to IFLR1000 (established 1990) and the International Financial Law Review magazine (established 1985). All three titles are published by Euromoney’s Legal Media Group.

The research: Conducted annually between October and March, IFLR1000 ENERGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE’s research process incorporates telephone interviews with in-house, corporate counsel and private practice partners; deal information submissions; and third party sources (including the International Financial Law Review magazine). Rankings are awarded on the basis of the following qualitative criteria: complexity of deals; innovation; quality of service; and cross-border capability.
